Meet the Teachers
Louise Farley lives in Charlotte NC and operates her working studio is in Concord NC at Clearwater Artist Studios. Louise has a BFA at the University of Knoxville, and teaching experience at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina, Fountain City Art Center, and Knoxville Arts and Crafts Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Louise enjoys teaching all levels of artists and has a beautiful insight into every lesson. The making of art is about recognizing a feeling about the subject. A concept that Louise teaches with her vast experience in classroom settings. You will experience her talents while learning to use acrylic paints and other mediums, with a free and expensive style. Come and enjoy! Louise resides in Charlotte, NC. where she is a full-time painter and teacher.

Regina Calton Burchett is an American artist working primarily in pastel, charcoal and oil. She graduated from Michigan State University, studying textiles and art, and continued with her art studies after graduation.
Burchett’s work was included in the Winter Show at Greenhill in Greensboro in 2017 and 2021, she was a finalist in The Artist's Magazine's 29th Annual Art Competition and has been the featured artist in the Informed Collector Daily Brief. She won the 2nd place award in the 2015 North Ridge Art Gala in Raleigh, was invited to participate in the 2015 Carolina’s Got Art Exhibit at the Elder Gallery in Charlotte, a Five Woman show with Crown Artists at the Cornwell Center in Charlotte, and the “Human Nature” and “Discover Local” exhibits at The Galleries of the Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord.

Billie Shelburn has studied painting with a number of prominent watercolorists. She has served on the boards of several art organizations and is a member of the National Organization for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Her work is represented in numerous galleries and exhibitions. Billie has taught art classes to both children and adults, and she has also taught creative writing in public and private schools. Billie enjoys incorporating humor and life situations as a creative outlet, along with therapy-related exercises for artists. Billie Shelburn resides in Hayesville, NC

Ken Hobson is an Award winning American Watercolorist, full time painter and workshop instructor. Ken Hobson has spent 30 years as an Illustrator working with advertising agencies & design firms. In his early thirties, he was a Senior Artist for Walt Disney World. HE IS A GRADUATE OF KENDALL COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN,
Grand Rapids, MI. For the past 10 years, Ken has been a popular & sought-after workshop instructor with over 100 workshops to date. Ken has exhibited in over 25 shows.

Nancy Richards has been studying and practicing art in a variety of media for over forty years, currently focused on alcohol ink painting and mixed media work. She has taught alcohol ink painting classes locally, at the John C Campbell Folk School, and in New England. Her work is on display at Number 7 Arts, a cooperative gallery in Brevard, NC, and at Firefly Craft Gallery in Flat Rock, NC and has also appeared in Asheville Made and WNC Woman magazines.

Ann Dergara is well known for her support in creating the knowledge and growth of Art in Brevard, NC. Ann studied Art at Ga, State University, School of Visual Arts, N.Y., Printmaking at Atlanta College of Art…. Sculpture with Ruth Zukerman and photography with Neal Chaput de St. Onge.

Julie Burch M.A. is a third-generation artist with over twenty-five years of experience teaching art to people of all levels and ages through Sarasota County Schools, Ringling College of Art and Design, and Private organizations. Her art has been sold through galleries and can be found in private collections. She works in drawing, ink, acrylic, oil and mixed media. She is a published author and is the creator of the Florida Wildlife Coloring book with 42 animals to color, published by Pineapple Press and available on Amazon, she is a certified Zentangle teacher and teaches online and in person. Writing as Juliet Brilee, she has authored the seven novels in the clean, contemporary, suspenseful, Escape to Valencia Cove romance series. Margaret Scanlan, a full-time studio painter. Margaret, is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Watercolor USA Honor Society. Her work is exhibited and held in private, corporate, and museum collections in the U.S. and in Europe. Her band, Red-Haired Mary, sings and plays Irish and Celtic songs and tunes in the Irish Pub Band tradition, both locally and regionally, throughout Tennessee and North Carolina.
“Discovering Watercolor”
Angel Allen is best known for her highly textured and patterned forms and surfaces through the mediums of mosaics and ceramics. Guided by curiosity, a profound interest in the outdoors and the myriad patterns, colors and textures formed from the rhythms of daily life, Angel Allen strives to imbue these characteristics in her work. After eighteen years of teaching high school studio art and ceramics and as a recent transplant to Brevard, NC, she is excited to focus her attention on full-time making and sharing her knowledge and experiences through workshops and teaching.
Her artist residencies include Wild Acres, Mepkin Abbey Guest Artist, Our Father’s Guest House, Port-au-Prince, Haiti and The Tin Shop Guest Artist Program in Breckinridge, Colorado. Her hand-painted tiles, custom mosaic commissions and ceramic forms are in private collections throughout the Southeast and beyond.

Mary Lou Hightower is a practicing artist with 50 years of teaching experience in the Spartanburg District Six schools and University of South Carolina Upstate. She recently retired from University of South Carolina Upstate and was awarded the honor of Professor of Emeritus of Art. She is a signature member of the South Carolina Watermedia Society where she has been accepted in numerous juried watercolor shows throughout the Southeast. Her love of quilts and patchwork comes from her grandmother who was a quilter until age 95. Mary Lou is a resident creative at Mayfair Art Studios, an affiliate of Chapman Cultural Center. Mayfair Art Studio is a converted old textile mill in Spartanburg. She also holds a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and Art from the University of South Carolina.

Pat Morgan has been painting and teaching for many years in New York, New Jersey and now in Western North Carolina. Her demonstrations focus on capturing just the essence of her subjects whether in figures, flowers or landscapes.
She has received several local and regional awards and is a signature member of the Northeast Watercolor Society, Audubon Artists, Inc. and a former elected member of the NJ Watercolor Society and the Salmagundi Club in NYC.

John Desjarlais is a former producer with Wisconsin Public Radio and retired professor of English, John Desjarlais writes historical and mysteries including The Throne of Tara: A Novel of Saint Columba (Crossway 1990), The Light of Tara: A Novel of Saint Patrick (KDP 2020), Relics (Thomas Nelson 1993), Bleeder, Viper, Specter (Chesterton Press 2008, 2011, 2015), and The Kill Floor (Torchflame Books 2022). His stories and poems have appeared in a variety of journals such as The Critic, Conclave, Lit Noir, The Rockford Review, and Dappled Things, some of which were collected in Blood of the Martyrs and other stories (KDP 2012). A member of Mystery Writers of America, The Rockford Writers Guild, The North Carolina Poetry Society and The North Carolina Writers Network, Desjarlais is listed in Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

The Barn in Penrose offers 3000 square feet of rustic, under roof, open air space designed to draw people together for learning and celebration. We invite you to come to be a part of our mission to develop a community of artists and musicians with the goal of sparking creativity in a beautiful natural setting.
Workshops at this time will be limited to 12 students. Each student will have their own workspace with able distance between students.
